Open Question: How come Scandinavian nations have less debt per GDP percentage than the USA?

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_countries_by_future_gross_government_debt I thought that they were reckless, irresponsible spendthrifts who have socialized everything? Is it because we foot the bill for their defense? Defense from what? The USSR hasn't existed since 1991! Even when the Soviet Union existed, Finland went to war with them without our help. Why is this? Why do we have nearly 100% of our GDP as debt and Norway, Sweden, Finland and Denmark don't? I thought socialism failed? Or is it that these countries really aren't socialist but capitalist countries with different priorities and a certain degree of human compassion to its citizens? Denmark has no military?
